In the past few years, I’ve become a journaler. Before anyone else is up in the morning, I’ve connected with my feelings, planned my day, and established some goals to hit by dinner. One of the most useful reminders I write for myself comes from Phil Stutz, an eminent psychotherapist. If you spend any time on Netflix, he’s the subject of the recent Jonah Hill movie, “Stutz”. (It’s a great watch - check it out!)
The graphic above is Phil’s mnenomic drawing for “Life Force”. He defines it as “the thing you can work on if you don’t know what else to work on”. The triangle shape, much like the familiar “nutrition pyramid” establishes areas to focus on in order to build your “Life Force”.
“Body” is the base of the pyramid and establishes Moving as the number one thing to do for mental health. “85% of our mental health issues can be dealt with by simply moving our bodies regularly”, says Phil.
“People” is the next level of the pyramid. Connecting with others is another big part of mental health. Interstingly, Phil says that it doesn’t matter who it is! Connect with people during the day. Each person you meet “represents humanity”. Take the time to connect. BUT (and this is a crucial but), it enhances your life force the most when YOU initiate contact. Waiting on others to do it won’t really work. Make contact first.
And “Me” at the top of the Life Force pyramid is also a crucial part of the work. Write every day. Journal. Blog. email. Write a letter. Express what you’re going through to yourself and to others.
Today I’m celebrating my own Life Force! I walked for 20 minutes this morning, even though it was 13 degrees out! I journaled. And now, I’m contacting you, dear reader of “The Friendship Garden!” Here’s to enhancing our Life Force today and every day! Happy Sunday!
I’ve seen the ad on Netflix for Stutz and had never heard of him until now. Thanks for your recommendation. I’ll definitely check it out. I like the simplicity of this pyramid. Makes what could be daunting, doable!
Love it. And the access to the body thru community is for sure poppin!
